It isn't your imagination, and it probably isn't even the heat. If you've been waking at 3 a.m. this month — sheet damp, fan running, oddly exhausted despite a full night in bed — the culprit is the number nobody checks on the forecast: humidity.
Across much of India, mid-August is the stickiest stretch of the year. Delhi has been sitting in 65–90% humidity with a heat index climbing past 45°C even when the actual temperature is a moderate 35°C. The thermometer says one thing; your body, lying awake at night, says another. Here's what's actually happening under the sheet — and what you can do about it.

Your body needs to cool down to fall asleep. Humidity won't let it.
Sleep isn't something your brain simply switches on. It's triggered, in part, by a drop in your core body temperature. As bedtime approaches, your core naturally falls by about 1–2°C, and that dip is one of the signals that tells your brain it's time to rest. Cooler surroundings help that drop along; a hot, sticky room fights it.
Your body sheds that heat mainly by sweating and letting it evaporate off your skin. And this is exactly where humidity sabotages you: when the air is already saturated with moisture, sweat can't evaporate efficiently. The heat has nowhere to go. Your internal thermostat is trying to power down for the night, and the muggy air around you keeps it stuck in the ‘on' position.
Sleep researchers have measured this directly. In controlled studies, sleeping in hot, humid conditions (around 32°C at 80% humidity) kept people's core body temperature from falling the way it normally does at night — and the results followed: more time spent awake, less deep slow-wave sleep, less REM, and higher heart rate and sweat rate through the night. One review even found that each degree a bedroom climbs above a comfortable threshold measurably chips away at sleep efficiency.
In plain terms: humid heat doesn't just make you uncomfortable. It measurably fragments the two most restorative stages of your sleep — the deep sleep that repairs your body and the REM sleep that consolidates memory and mood. That's why you can spend eight hours in bed during a humid spell and still wake up feeling like you barely slept.
Why the fan and the AC aren't quite fixing it
Most of us reach for the obvious levers — crank the fan, drop the AC a degree, flip the pillow to the cool side. They help with air temperature. But they do far less about the humidity trapped right at the surface you're lying on.
There's a hidden micro-climate in the few centimetres between your body and your mattress. Your skin is warm and constantly releasing moisture; if the mattress underneath you traps that heat and damp instead of letting it disperse, you end up lying in a warm, humid pocket of your own making — regardless of what the room's thermostat says. What actually helps you sleep through a humid night
Some of this is habit, and some of it is what you sleep on. A few things genuinely move the needle:
- Target the micro-climate, not just the room. A ceiling fan on a low setting isn't only about temperature — gentle air movement across the bed helps sweat evaporate, which is the exact mechanism humidity blocks. Airflow at the surface matters more than a colder room.
- Choose breathable bedding. Natural fibres like cotton and linen let moisture pass through and move away from your skin far better than synthetic sheets, which trap it. In humid months, lighter and looser beats soft and heavy.
- Keep a pre-sleep cool-down. A lukewarm (not cold) shower before bed helps kick-start the core-temperature drop your body is trying to make anyway. Cold water actually signals your body to retain heat, so lukewarm is the sweet spot.
- Mind the bedroom's humidity, not only its temperature. A comfortable sleeping range sits around 30–50% relative humidity. During a damp spell, a dehumidifier or even good cross-ventilation once the evening rain passes can bring a stuffy room back toward that range.
- Look at what's under you. If your mattress traps heat, everything else is working against a headwind. A sleep surface built to move heat and moisture away — rather than hold it — is the single change that fixes the micro-climate at its source.
